Is Kratom illegal in the country? I heard it’s the same as opium! Kratom is a party drug, right?
More often than not, we’ve all heard a version of these three Kratom myths at any discussion where the substance is brought up. Despite study after study disproving the negative side effects of Kratom, many people still hold on to these myths. We’re here to debunk that.
That being said, before you order Kratom online, it’s always best to consult with Kratom experts, and always start with the lowest dosage possible. Read up as much as you can about Kratom, it’s effects, it’s side-effects, it’s pharmacology, and its origins before deciding on whether you feel Kratom is right for you and your physical needs.
Kratom Myths Debunked: Kratom Is Almost the Same As Heroin
Is Kratom the same as Heroin? No, it is not.
Opioids are a class of narcotics that include heroin and fentanyl. The myth that Kratom is highly addictive comes from misinterpretation of its pharmacological properties. There are two, active compounds in Kratom that have similar effects to opioids and stimulants: mitragynine and 7-a-hydroxymitragynine. These two substances interact with the opioid receptors in the brain, influencing them to start releasing serotonin and other sedative-like chemicals in your body. This produces the sleepy, relaxed, and pain-relieving side effects that some strains of Kratom create in users.
Alternatively, some strains of Kratom will have those compounds interact with other receptors in the brain, producing stimulating effects such as high energy levels, increased mental focus, and elevated moods.
Unlike heroin, Kratom dependence is easily manageable, and while some users have reported physical side-effects, withdrawal symptoms from Kratom dependance is uncommon. It’s also worth noting that proper Kratom use relies heavily on controlled intake, usually consisting of very small amounts.
Kratom Myths Debunked: Kratom Is Only Used Recreationally
Is Kratom just a party drug? No, it is not.
Kratom has a bad rep of being a recreational drug specifically because of its sedative or stimulant effects. These effects range from elevated feelings of relaxation and sedation to increased energy levels, mental focus, and better mood. While these effects are to be expected, Kratom is more likely to be used for two reasons: pain management and opioid withdrawal.
Unfortunately, mainstream pain management involves powerful narcotics that, despite careful medical oversight, can still lead to narcotic dependance. While alternatives such as physical therapy and all-natural medicines can help, Kratom is the most effective in terms of relieving pain in the long run while offering the least number of side effects.
Kratom can also be used for opioid withdrawal. Because Kratom’s active substances act on the opioid receptors of the brain despite not being an opioid in and of itself, the body is ‘tricked’ into thinking that it is receiving its dose of opium-like substances, allowing your body and mind to heal slowly and recover over time. Yes, Kratom can be used recreationally because it is a safe substance, but as much as possible, it is best when used for physical wellness and pain relief.
Kratom Myths Debunked: Kratom Is Highly Illegal In The United States
Is Kratom banned in America? Not exactly: Kratom is legal on the Federal level, but there are 6 states that have banned Kratom completely.
In fact, the Federal government does not have official regulations governing Kratom’s usage, possession, sale, or purchase. In the entire continental United States, only 6 states –Alabama, Arkansas, Indiana, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Wisconsin –have banned Kratom possession outright, while 4 states have adopted the Kratom Consumer Protection Act, or KCPA, which allows states to regulate the drug. The other 40 states do not have any regulations that oversee the usage, sale, purchase, or possession of Kratom.
Despite some misgivings by the public, many medical experts agree that the beneficial side-effects of Kratom outweigh the negative, with negative side-effects cropping up in a very small number of users in controlled experiments. That being said, as with any medicine, it’s best to start taking Kratom using the smallest dose possible, only increasing the dosage if and when the beneficial side-effects are not felt. Should you experience negative side-effects, immediately stop and go back to the lowest dosage.
